History of Gurdwara Shaheeda Sahib (Shaheed Ganj Baba Deep Singh Ji)
Gurdwara Shaheeda Sahib, also known as Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Baba Deep Singh Ji, is one of the most revered Sikh historical shrines in Amritsar, Punjab. Located near Chatiwind Gate, this sacred Gurdwara commemorates the supreme sacrifice of Baba Deep Singh Ji, one of the greatest Sikh warriors, scholars, and the first Head of the Damdami Taksal. The shrine also honors the countless Sikh martyrs who laid down their lives while defending the sanctity of Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple).
The Battle for Sri Harmandir Sahib
In 1757, after the Afghan forces led by Ahmed Shah Durrani (Abdali) desecrated Sri Harmandir Sahib and damaged the sacred Sarovar, the news reached Baba Deep Singh Ji at Damdama Sahib. Deeply moved by the attack on Sikhism's holiest shrine, Baba Deep Singh Ji pledged that he would reach Sri Harmandir Sahib and restore its honor, even if it meant sacrificing his own life.
At the age of nearly seventy-five, Baba Deep Singh Ji gathered thousands of devoted Sikhs and marched towards Amritsar. Along the way, many more Sikhs joined the campaign, determined to defend their faith and protect the sacred shrine. A fierce battle took place on the outskirts of Amritsar, where Baba Deep Singh Ji and his companions fought with extraordinary courage against a much larger Afghan force.
Martyrdom of Baba Deep Singh Ji
During the battle, Baba Deep Singh Ji sustained a fatal neck wound while fighting the Afghan army. Sikh tradition recounts that despite being mortally wounded, he continued advancing towards Sri Harmandir Sahib, fulfilling his vow with unwavering devotion and unmatched bravery. His sacrifice became one of the most inspiring events in Sikh history and a lasting symbol of faith, courage, and commitment to righteousness.
Establishment of Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj
The site where the final rites (Antim Sanskar) of Baba Deep Singh Ji and many Sikh martyrs were performed later became known as Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Baba Deep Singh Ji. In the eighteenth century, Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia established a memorial at this sacred location. During the nineteenth century, Akali Phula Singh Ji developed the memorial into a proper Gurdwara. In the early twentieth century, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) further expanded and renovated the complex into the beautiful historic shrine seen today.
