| Gurdwara
Kaulsar Sahib, also known as Gurdwara Mata Kaulan, is a historic Sikh shrine
situated near Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. It stands beside the Kaulsar
Sarovar and is associated with Bibi Kaulan, a respected devotee connected
with Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. The shrine has a peaceful atmosphere and is an
important stop for pilgrims visiting the historic gurdwaras around the Golden
Temple. The Kaulsar Sarovar forms the visual and spiritual centre of the complex. Its waters, surrounding marble pathways, and the nearby gurdwara create a calm environment for prayer and reflection. The site is particularly notable because it preserves the memory of a woman whose devotion and service became an important part of Sikh history. Bibi Kaulan is remembered for her deep faith and her association with Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. The name Kaulsar honours her memory and has become permanently connected with the sacred pool and gurdwara. The shrine also reflects the inclusive character of Sikh tradition. Its history is linked with a woman born into a Muslim family who became a devoted follower of the Sikh Guru. This makes the site particularly meaningful when considering the connections between communities in the history of Punjab. Today, Gurdwara Kaulsar Sahib remains an active place of worship. Devotees visit for prayer, kirtan, and remembrance, while visitors can appreciate the peaceful setting and the historic relationship between Kaulsar, Bibi Kaulan, and Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Historical Significance The historical significance of Kaulsar Sahib is closely connected with Bibi Kaulan and Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Bibi Kaulan was born into a Muslim family in Lahore and became deeply devoted to Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Her spiritual commitment brought her into conflict with those who opposed her association with the Guru, and she eventually came under the Guru's protection. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji gave her a place of safety in Amritsar, where she spent her later years in devotion, prayer, and service. Her memory became associated with the sacred pool that was later called Kaulsar. According to Sikh tradition, the excavation of Kaulsar began in the 1620s under the supervision of Baba Buddha Ji and was completed during the following years. The sarovar became an important part of the religious landscape surrounding Harmandir Sahib. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji is traditionally associated with advising Sikhs to recognize the spiritual importance of the Kaulsar waters. The site is especially significant because it honours a Muslim-born woman whose devotion was accepted and respected within the Sikh community. This gives Kaulsar Sahib a distinctive place in the history of interfaith relations in Punjab. The present gurdwara and sarovar continue to preserve this memory. The shrine stands as a reminder of devotion beyond social boundaries, the protection of those facing persecution, and the Sikh values of compassion and service. |
