Description

Baba Budha Ji – Ber Baba Budha Sahib The sacred Ber (berry tree) known as Ber Baba Budha Sahib marks the historic spot where Baba Budha Ji once camped while serving during the excavation of the holy tank and the construction of Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. Born as Bura in October 1506 in the village of Kathu Nangal, District Amritsar, to Bhai Sugha Randhawa and Mata Gauran Ji, Baba Budha Ji displayed remarkable spiritual maturity from a very young age. As a child, while grazing cattle near the village of Ramdas, he had the blessed opportunity to meet Guru Nanak, who was returning to Kartarpur. With deep respect, young Bura offered milk to the Guru and engaged in thoughtful questions about God and spirituality. Impressed by his wisdom and seriousness beyond his years, Guru Nanak lovingly named him “Budha,” meaning “the wise old one,” though he was only a boy. From that day forward, he became known as Baba Budha Ji. Baba Budha Ji played a significant role in Sikh history. He had the rare honor of performing the Guruship installation ceremonies from Guru Angad to Guru Hargobind. In 1604, when Guru Arjan compiled and installed the Guru Granth Sahib at Sri Harmandir Sahib, Baba Budha Ji was appointed as its first Granthi (official scripture reader). He passed away in 1631 at the village of Ramdas. His final rites were performed by Guru Hargobind Sahib, marking the end of a life devoted entirely to faith, humility, and service. Today, the sacred Ber stands as a symbol of dedication and spiritual wisdom, reminding devotees of Baba Budha Ji’s immense contribution to Sikh history.
